I Can See Droppings But No Pigeons, What Should I Do?

When you see droppings left by an animal, you know that you have a problem on your property. That's how it usually goes with most wild critter invaders, and the feces is actually often the first sign to give the game away. That's certainly the case with rats and other rodents.

With pigeons, things can be a little different. They can manage to find a way into the roof void or attic with very little effort, and then they can roost in there. If that's the case, you might not see them unless you physically head up there for yourself, but they will still leave droppings as they fly in and out of the roost. If you see pigeon poop, the pigeons are there. Whether you can see them or not, they are there.

Wherever you will find pigeons and pigeon poop, you'll also find pigeon-borne diseases, and they can be plentiful and potentially deadly. At the very least, they're unpleasant. It also means that you should clean the mess up carefully, and only when you are properly protected. It is not an overreaction to wear boot coveralls, disposable coveralls, eye protection, and a breathing mask. When pigeon poop dries, it hardens and some of it turns into dust. The hardened stuff works a bit like concrete, and is actually used by the bird to reinforce the strength of the nest. The dusty stuff, however, can be very dangerous. If disease spores or bacteria are on those dusty, airborne particles, they can then be inhaled by people or other animals, passing the diseases along in that manner.

Once you discover pigeon poop, you will then need to discover where the pigeons themselves are. There is a chance that the birds are roosting in a roof void or attic space, perhaps even your roof void or attic space. You can't leave them there because they'll never leave, and you can't leave them producing more feces because of the disease-spreading and corrosive nature of it. The feces can actually do more damage than the birds will, in some cases.

The removal of birds, both adult and young, as well as nesting material and waste material is vitally important when trying to remove a bird or pigeon problem from your property. If you leave one part of the job out, such as sealing up the roof void, then pigeons are free to come back. If you don't clean the feces up as properly or as thoroughly as you should have done, you're running the risk of spreading disease. And all the while you leave those birds where they are, the more they'll reproduce. It really will become a problem that just keeps on getting bigger.
